Attention is the new currency
To be a successful mompreneur marketer, there is one super important thing that you need to focus on to become successful. You need to gain the POSITIVE, INTEREST-BASED ATTENTION of a lot of people.
There has been a common saying passed around in the marketing world that “attention is the new currency” (not my quote). It’s so true!
If you gain a lot of the right kind of attention, there are a bunch of different methods available to convert it into cash. I’ll give some examples of how to do this shortly in this example. However, as a mompreneur marketer, your focus needs to be on getting the right kind of attention.
After you get the attention, converting it into cash is the fun part. Let’s dig in!
How to convert attention into cash
I’m planning to write more comprehensive articles detailing most of the ways to convert attention into cash. However, I want to give you some examples so you can see what kind of fun things await you.
Note that many of these techniques are advanced topics. They may sound intimidating, but if you’ve got a lot of attention – you’re an advanced marketer and don’t even know it!
How to Make Money off of Attention
- You can do product reviews and include your own Amazon affiliate links
- You can create e-books with more advanced topics and sell it to your audience
- You can boost your Etsy or Amazon rank, which will lead to more organic sales
- You can get valuable insight into what customers want and can use that to restructure your products
- Google will pay you for more video views on your YouTube channel
- You can join an ad network, who will pay you to show ads (blog only)
- Way down the road, you might sell your business. You’ll get more money for having a larger audience.
The type of attention matters!
While bigger corporations will say that any type of publicity is good publicity, that’s not the case for the small business mompreneur. You don’t have the time or the money to spin negative publicity the way you would need to. The kinds of attention you need for your business are:
- Positive attention
- Interest-based attention
When gathering attention for your business, try to remain focused on gathering the right kind of attention.
Positive attention
In the tight-knit community of mompreneurs and those that support them, negative publicity will destroy the mompreneur. I’ve seen it happen many times in several different niches, and the impacted mompreneur rarely fully recovers.
Examples of negative attention:
- Mimicking others artwork
- Drama
- Legal troubles (i.e., copyright infringement)
- Low quality products
Follow the rules and Etiquette
Be a stickler for following rules and etiquette, and produce high quality products. This will help you gain the right kind of positive attention.
Interest-based attention
Interest-based attention is attention from people who are genuinely interested in your products or services. If your audience isn’t interested, your attempts to convert that attention into cash will fail.
For example, one way to get attention is to conduct a free giveaway contest. If you do a giveaway for your own product, the people whose interest you will tend to draw are those that are interested in the product. Conversely, giving away a $100 gift certificate to Amazon will generally appeal to everyone. You’ll get a lot of attention from people who aren’t interested in your product.
How to Gain Attention
How to get the right kind of attention is a large, intimidating topic – and rightfully so! However, this is the most important part of your mompreneur marketing: gathering the audience. So it’s totally worth it to work hard on growing your audience.
Because it is such a large topic, I cover it separately here:
But it is too intimidating!
Yup, this is intimidating stuff. It’s a lot to take in. Try out my article where I try to make it less intimidating by comparing it to something a little more tangible:
Conclusion
Getting positive, interest-based attention is the key to succeeding at mompreneur marketing.
I explained it in more detail above, but you can validate it yourself: Off the top of your head, which other mompreneurs would you consider to be the most successful? Do they all have large audiences with an interest-based focus?
Once you have the attention, the fun part of converting that attention into money starts! But you have to roll up your sleeves and put in the work to build your audience. It won’t happen overnight (barring a super viral post, which is like winning the lottery).
